Leading the way
Preparations for this year’s 75th Aldeburgh Carnival are well underway with the selection of the Carnival Queen and her attendants pictured here. Shannon Strowger (21) will be heading the procession on Monday 21st August with her three personally chosen attendants. Shannon is a hairdresser at Lady Dye’s in Leiston and comes from a family with a unique carnival pedigree. Her mother
Beverly was Carnival Queen in 1981 and her father Vernon was Mr Neptune in 2007, a very rare occasion when a Carnival King presided. Off duty, Shannon is an enthusiastic walker and is equally keen on reading a good book.
Holding court with Sharron aboard a specially designed float will be Eve Atkins aged 11 (left), Jessica Waters aged 10 (centre) and Evie Brinded who is 9 years old (right). Sport features strongly in Eve’s pass times, especially playing football plus art, drawing and baking. She shares her love of music (and Ed Sheeran) with Jessica who with Evie, are both members of the Erin Lee Murphy School of Dance in Saxmundham – the Suffolk All Stars. Evie is also a competitive swimmer and adores mathematics.
After their introduction to the public on the Moot Hall steps, serious dressmaking is now under way ready for the 75th Grand Parade and Procession. Unusually, they will not be entirely alone in the Carnival Queen arena. One of the specials in this year’s procession will feature up to 30 former Carnival Queens who graced the carnival from as far back as the 1950s!
